Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been appointed head coach of Dutch side Heerenveen.

The Netherlands’ record men’s goalscorer, Van Persie, has signed a two-year deal and will begin his first managerial role in the summer.

I recall talk of Van Persie being a potential candidate to join Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff, after the former Ajax manager moved to Old Trafford, but that never materialised. Van Persie will now take charge of Heerenveen’s senior side as he gets his first taste of management.

Van Persie took to X to announce his new job this afternoon.

Current Heerenveen boss Kees van Wonderen made it known in March that he would be stepping down from the role at the end of his contract.

Since retiring as a player in 2019, Van Persie has worked as an assistant coach at Fenenoord and has been in charge of the club’s U18s and U19 sides.

This, however, will be Van Persie’s first managerial job at senior level.

“I would like to continue my development and the role o0f head coach fits in perfectly with that goal,” Van Persie said, as per BBC Sport.

“Heerenveen is a very nice Premier League club with a rich tradition and loyal supporters.

“It is a fantastic challenge to contribute to the sporting ambitions and development of the club as head coach.”

Heerenveen also shared some snaps of Van Persie on a boat, as you do…
